Overview

After conversations with Flynn Wright about bringing more comedy into Mediacom's spots, one of their writers delivered a script with a great twist: a daughter and her dad yelling at each other across the house, like something's gone terribly wrong. Except nothing has. Her internet is working so well that there's no drama at all.

The Challenge

The performances had to thread a needle. Viewers needed to hear the intensity — the shouting, the rising stakes — without ever feeling anything negative, because this is a positive spot. And the shoot landed after Iowa's leaves were gone, so we needed somewhere with workable weather and the right house.

The Idea

Take the beats of a family fight and attach them to good news. The daughter yells for her dad because she's streaming so smoothly she's already finished season two. Dad's comeback: download season three. Then the button flips the whole thing: "Want some ice cream? I'm getting you some." It looks like a fight. It's actually a dad and daughter about to have ice cream together.

The Craft

The comedy lives in the performances. Working with the actors, Jacob shaped delivery and body language so the lines play at full volume yet leave you smiling. Camera movement builds the sense of a showdown that never comes. We shot in Kansas City, where the weather was still with us, a bigger market offered a home with a unique look, and a new cast pool gave us fresh faces. The result is a funny spot that still looks beautiful, with lighting and a look we're proud of, built over a couple of days. Jacob directed and shot.

Working with the team

This was another collaboration with Flynn Wright's creative directors, writers, and producers, a team we always love creating with. Their writer's concept gave us something playful to build on, and our Kansas City crew helped bring it to life.

- The flipped-tone approach led straight to a follow-up: another Mediacom spot in the same opposite-style comedy, this time playing with the "horrors" of internet.
