Better Homes & Gardens — "Win The Weekend" feat. Chris Loves Julia
Better Homes & Gardens · Sponsor: Capital One · Featured partner: GMC
Overview
"Win The Weekend" is a DIY makeover series for Better Homes & Gardens, sponsored by Capital One, with GMC featured as a partner in each episode. Better Homes & Gardens spotted design duo Chris Loves Julia early — well before their later brand partnerships — and built the series around them: a living room, a bedroom, and a basement, each transformed over a single weekend.
The Challenge
Capture the spirit of the big home-renovation shows in a fraction of the runtime. Each episode had to deliver a real, satisfying transformation that felt snackable and achievable — something a viewer could picture doing themselves — while giving Chris and Julia room to be who their audience already loves.
The Idea
Structure without a script. We put the ideas and the shape of each episode in place, then left space for Chris and Julia to be authentically themselves and talk through their own design choices. Real homes, real transformations, real people — condensed into a weekend you believe you could win too.
The Craft
The look is natural, present daylight, never a set. Every room was lit to feel like the home it is. With several camera operators covering a large build team at work, much of the magic was found in the edit: pacing that keeps a DIY story moving and satisfying without ever feeling rushed. Jacob directed, DP'd, edited, colored, and handled sound design and scoring.
Working with the team
The series brought together Better Homes & Gardens, Capital One, GMC, Chris and Julia, and a large build crew executing real renovations on a real deadline. Keeping the production responsive to the talent and the build — rather than the other way around — is what let the episodes feel alive.
