Lonestar — "Just the Rain" Music Video
Artist: Lonestar
Overview
"Just the Rain" comes from Lonestar's album Life As We Know It, written by Richie McDonald with Jeremy Bussey. The song follows a man sitting on his porch, feeling the presence of someone he's lost — passers-by think he's crying because of the rain. Lonestar came to Jacob to write and direct a concept that would carry the song, with the band performing in the video.
The Challenge
Build a story that honors the song's grief without simply illustrating it, and weave the band's performance into that story so both feel like one piece.
The Idea
In the video's story, a father raises his daughter alone after losing his wife to a school shooting — an inciting incident chosen to place viewers instantly in the headspace of that loss. Rain is the trigger for his memories: his wife loved it, and would pull them outside to dance in it beneath an umbrella. The daughter grows up through the milestones her mother misses — a little girl, a teenager heading to prom, a first date, and finally her wedding, where her father's pride sits beside the absence everyone feels.
The Craft
We cast look-alike actresses so the daughter's age progression felt seamless, and gave the lead actor the space and setting to let his emotional moments land. The house itself became a character, holding old memories of his wife and new ones with his daughter. The band's performance was staged down a long hallway in the location, with an old piano played by Dean Sams, the drummer at the back, and the band lined along the hall. Because it can't rain in the house, umbrellas were suspended overhead to carry the motif indoors. Props were sourced from Mike Wolfe's Nashville store — a fitting thread back to our Iowa Lottery work.
Working with the team
This was a deep, genuine collaboration with Lonestar and the songwriters, built on shared care for what the song means.
